CO2 Laser is the Gold Standard treatment for skin tightening and skin resurfacing.

It dramatically improves uneven skin texture, signs of aging, reduction in wrinkles, skin laxity, enlarged pores, photodamage, scars, and indentations for youthful looking skin.

How is CO2 Laser Resurfacing Works?

CO2 laser work by delivering focused columns of strong heat energy into the skin. The laser quickly superheats water molecules in the skin tissue. When the water in the skin turns into gas, the skin cells vaporize. This effect promotes collagen formation and retraction of the dermis and epidermis to tighten the skin.

Over the course of three to seven days, the skin self-exfoliates to expose fresh, new skin with improved tone and texture. In just a few weeks, you’ll be fully healed with brighter, more youthful looking skin. Collagen production will increase over time for gradual, ongoing improvements.

CO2 lasers can be used all over the face and body.

CO2 laser resurfacing introduced in the mid 1990’s and changed the landscape of aesthetic medicine overnight.

The initial lasers were continuous waves with very little control and delivered less than stellar results with many adverse effects compared to modern day resurfacing.

The next generation offered much more control to deliver better results with significantly reduced downtime and adverse events.

Ablative fractional lasers remove small columns of epidermal and dermal tissues, which then regenerate into brand new tissue required long downtime.

Non-ablative fractional lasers create microscopic zones of tissue injury, which become remodeled. It does not remove tissue like an ablative laser does. It requires lower downtime and might need more than one treatment to achieve the desired results.

The SmartSkin C02 laser has a wavelength of 10,600 nm and delivers laser pulses to the skin. Each laser pulse creates a micro-zone of ablation in the epidermis, and the number of pulses in each given area can be carefully controlled.

Adjusting the spacing of the laser pulses allows us to leave some of the skin surface untouched, leading to faster healing and less downtime. We also control the timing and power level of the pulses, allowing for aggressive procedure outcomes.

  • Light mode– This option is often described as a “laser peel”. It is a good option in younger patients and can serve as an “introduction” to CO2 laser treatment. It helps improve superficial tone and texture while keeping downtime to a minimum.
  • Mid mode– This option provides a more aggressive treatment then the light mode. It improves skin tone and texture but since the laser energy penetrates deeper into the epidermis and superficial dermis, it also helps with wrinkles.
  • Deep mode– This mode offers a deeper treatment and is used for acne scars, traumatic scars, and surgical scars. It also helps with deeper wrinkles.
  • Fusion mode – This mode targets both the epidermis and dermis and that’s why it is called fusion mode. It combines both the mid and deep modes and allows treatment of skin tone and texture as well as scars and wrinkles in the same session. This is the most aggressive mode with longer downtime.
